Walking through the crowds - Sept. 25, 2014

Many New Yorkers don’t like the way tourists stop in the middle of sidewalks to take pictures of the city’s great landmarks. But, on the other hand, people commute each day to Manhattan and don’t see the beauty around them as they march to their cubicles.

On his way to the office today, Yahoo News photographer Gordon Donovanstopped to photograph some of these locations on his way into work today.

Mount Ontake erupts

A volcano in central Japan erupted in spectacular fashion, catching mountain climbers by surprise and stranding at least 40 injured people in areas that rescue workers have been unable to reach. Another seven people were missing.

The injured, unable to descend 3,067-meter (10,062-foot) Mount Ontake on their own, are staying in mountain lodges, said Sohei Hanamura, a crisis management official in Nagano prefecture. Thirty-two people had serious injuries, including at least seven who lost consciousness. (AP)

Eric Holder, the first African-American to serve as attorney general of the United States, announced his resignation on Thursday, after a sometimes-stormy 5-1/2-year tenure as the nation’s top law enforcement official.

Holder is a key adviser to President Barack Obama on matters of race and civil rights, and his legacy will reflect a deep commitment to aggressive enforcement of anti-discrimination laws and striving to eliminate racial disparities in criminal sentences.

Holder was also a polarizing figure, attracting criticism for what detractors said was his misuse of the levers of power at the Justice Department to protect the Obama administration and its Democratic allies. (CSM)

Russia From Above: the Most Amazing Aerial Shots Ever

Since 2003, photographer Serguei Fomine has been shooting Russia’s most attractive natural, historical, and architectural objects from different aircrafts. This passion project has taken him to over 30 regions of Russia and had its share of dangers, including one incident in a balloon that landed in a swamp “with a great acceleration,” says Fomine. By a miracle, his lenses survived. Fomine says his work never loses its allure: “It doesn’t matter what I managed to photograph on that day — a strict geometric pattern of the St. Peter and St. Paul Fortress, goose flock spilled over the Ob river, or the lake in the crater of the volcano in Kamchatka — while landing on the ground I catch myself on the same thought: “How beautiful the flight was!”
